The Future of South Africa’s Wine Industry

drink well do good

The International Society of Africans in Wine (ISAW) is about to launch a 13 city, 2 country tour titled “Drink Well, Do Good” in hopes of raising $150,000 to create a training center in Stellenbosch that will teach Africans to become wine makers.

I am jazzed about ISAW for several reasons:

  • Since the end of Apartheid in South Africa in 1994, only one (that’s one!) black family has owned a vineyard, and ISAW is working to diversify the racial composition, ownership and management structure of the South African wine industry.
  • ISAW is supporting producers with socially responsible business practices and investing in African-owned businesses and entrepreneurs.
  • ISAW is using viticulture as the catalyst for social transformation in South Africa, one they say is ingrained in human rights and social equality.

Human rights and social equality!? Game on!!!

Below is a video of ISAW’s founder Steven Satterfield.  He will be on the “Drink Well, Do Good” tour in April which will feature two nights of African food, art and performance.  Not to be missed!
